Two German airport workers die of malaria after ‘mosquito arrives on plane’

Officials are diligently analyzing blood samples from the infected individuals. The purpose of this analysis is to determine whether a single mosquito was responsible for infecting all six workers, or if multiple infected mosquitoes were introduced, potentially on different flights or at different times. The disease is not transmissible from person to person but is always transmitted by mosquitoes." Previously, the RKI had stated that the four employees who fell ill between July 4th and 6th were believed to have been infected by mosquitoes brought in by plane. The institute further elaborated that malaria in Germany almost exclusively affects long-haul travelers who have been infected in malaria-endemic regions. Transmission of malaria within a German airport, therefore, is exceptionally rare, making this incident a significant public health concern.

The RKI’s epidemiological bulletin highlighted a critical factor contributing to the severity of such cases: delayed diagnosis. "The lack of a travel history can lead to a delayed diagnosis. A delayed diagnosis increases the risk of a severe course of the diseases," the institute stated. This is particularly relevant in an airport setting, where individuals may not immediately associate their symptoms with malaria, especially if they have not recently traveled to a known malaria-risk area. The incubation period of malaria can vary, and without a clear travel history, a diagnosis might be postponed, allowing the disease to progress.

The RKI also noted that the last recorded case of airport malaria prior to this outbreak also occurred at Frankfurt Airport, in 2023. This suggests a recurring vulnerability at the hub, perhaps due to its high volume of international traffic and the continuous arrival of aircraft from diverse geographical locations where malaria is prevalent.
