At the remarkably young age of 28, Gem was diagnosed with cervical cancer, a revelation that came as a complete shock given her youth, perceived good health, and absence of any discernible symptoms. Her journey involved surgery to remove the cancerous cells, along with lymph nodes from her abdomen and pelvis, a procedure crucial to preventing the spread of the disease. Reflecting on her ordeal, Gem unequivocally stated, "Looking back, I truly believe that going to my screening appointment saved my life. My cancer was found early, which allowed me to have treatment before it spread." She further expressed her enthusiasm for the NHS’s proactive step, noting, "That’s why it’s great news that the NHS is making it more accessible for some people to take part in screening."
