In the heart of Kotdwar, a small town in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, a 42-year-old gym owner named Deepak Kumar has become an unlikely national hero. His act of courage, captured on video and widely shared, has seen him hailed as an "icon for secular India" and a "posterboy for India’s pluralism." However, this newfound fame has also brought him into the crosshairs of religious extremism, subjecting him to protests, accusations of betraying his Hindu faith, and even death threats.

The incident that propelled Deepak into the national spotlight occurred on January 26th. He was at a friend’s shop when he witnessed approximately half a dozen activists from Bajrang Dal, a hardline Hindu group known for its harassment of Muslims, confronting Vakeel Ahmed, the elderly owner of a 30-year-old clothing store named "Baba School Dress and Matching Centre." The activists were demanding that Ahmed remove the word "Baba" from his shop’s name, claiming it should only be associated with the local Hindu deity Siddhabali Baba. "Baba," a term commonly used in India to refer to spiritual figures, fathers, or grandfathers, is embraced by both Hindus and Muslims. Ahmed’s son was heard pleading for more time, but the activists were insistent.

Deepak, drawn by the commotion, intervened. His immediate reaction, captured in the viral video, was to question the activists: "Are Muslims not citizens of India?" He later explained to BBC Hindi that he was disturbed by the rude and religiously motivated targeting of an elderly man. "They were targeting him because of his religion. They were targeting Muslims," he stated. Vakeel Ahmed, 68, recounted the fear he and his family felt, admitting they were unsure of what the activists might do.

When the Bajrang Dal activists, taken aback by Deepak’s defiance, asked for his name, he responded with a carefully chosen declaration: "My name is Mohammad Deepak." This strategic fusion of a Hindu given name with a Muslim surname was a powerful statement, intended to convey his identity as an Indian and his belief in the equal rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith. The unexpected response momentarily diffused the situation, and the activists left.

However, the repercussions were swift and severe. A few days later, over 150 Bajrang Dal supporters staged a protest outside Deepak’s gym. Following a complaint from Vakeel Ahmed regarding the harassment, the police registered a case against "unknown individuals." Simultaneously, a counter-complaint from two Hindu activists led to a case being registered against Deepak himself. This dual action by the authorities, coupled with the Bajrang Dal protest, amplified the incident’s visibility across India.

In a nation increasingly marked by unprovoked attacks on Muslims by Hindu mobs, Deepak’s courageous stand against religious vigilantism has been widely celebrated as an act of profound heroism. Prominent figures have lauded his actions. Rahul Gandhi, a Member of Parliament from the Congress party, described Deepak as "a hero of India" who is "fighting for the constitution and humanity." Gandhi further remarked on X (formerly Twitter) that Deepak was "spreading love in the marketplace of hate" and that "we need more Deepaks – those who don’t bend, don’t fear and who stand with full strength with the constitution."

An editorial in The Indian Express highlighted the video as a "source of much hope," stating that Deepak’s words offered "a shot in the arm in a society that often seems to have been overtaken by hatred and intolerance." The article emphasized that such acts remind people of the "real India," where diversity is cherished and individuals have the freedom to live and express themselves, including naming their businesses as they see fit.

Social media platforms buzzed with expressions of solidarity for Deepak. His phone remained constantly engaged with calls from journalists, photographers, and well-wishers. His Instagram follower count surged, and a video he posted on January 29th, articulating his philosophy – "I am not a Hindu, I am not a Muslim, I am not a Sikh, I am not a Christian. First and foremost, I am a human being" – garnered over five million likes.

Deepak himself has expressed surprise at the scale of the national attention his intervention has attracted. "I simply did what I thought was right. I never thought the matter would become so big. But now it’s become national news," he told reporters.

Despite the widespread admiration, the threats and harassment directed at Deepak and his family have been relentless. Critics have branded him a "traitor to his faith," and his social media accounts have been inundated with abusive messages. He has received numerous death threats, including one recorded phone call where the caller ominously stated, "Bajrang Dal shouldn’t have spared you… I’ll teach you a lesson soon." The constant barrage of threats and public scrutiny has left his family "traumatised" and him under "a lot of mental pressure."

The impact on his livelihood has been significant. His once-thriving gym, which previously saw over 150 daily visitors, has seen its clientele dwindle to a mere 15. Many potential clients are reportedly too afraid to attend due to the threats from communal elements. John Brittas, an opposition MP who visited Deepak, described him as "a beacon of hope in the struggle against the Hindutva communalism" and announced he had taken a membership at Deepak’s gym, which he noted was now deserted due to intimidation.

As news of Deepak’s financial struggles spread, people from across India rallied to support him. An X post by Joy Das exemplified this sentiment, stating, "We can’t let a good man lose," and encouraging others to purchase gym memberships.

Despite the severe personal and financial costs, Deepak remains steadfast in his conviction. He affirms that if faced with a similar situation, he would again choose to intervene. "If we remain silent today, tomorrow our children will also learn the same silence," he declared, underscoring his belief in the importance of speaking out against injustice, even in the face of adversity. His story has transcended a local incident, becoming a powerful symbol of resistance against religious intolerance and a testament to the enduring spirit of human solidarity in India.
