Clay Fuller and Shawn Harris head to runoff in Georgia race to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The special election held on Tuesday to fill the vacancy left by former Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has officially been projected to advance to a runoff, as no single candidate managed to secure the requisite majority of votes. The contest, which saw a significant number of hopefuls vying for the congressional seat, will now pit Republican Clay Fuller against Democrat Shawn Harris in a head-to-head battle for Georgia’s 14th congressional district. This projection was made by the BBC’s US partner, CBS, underscoring the competitive nature of the race.

Both Fuller and Harris emerged victorious from a crowded field of seventeen candidates, a testament to their respective campaign efforts and their ability to resonate with a segment of the district’s electorate. The outcome of Tuesday’s election is being closely watched as an early indicator of former President Donald Trump’s enduring influence in shaping the political landscape, particularly in the lead-up to the crucial midterm elections scheduled for November.

Clay Fuller, a former district attorney, has prominently featured President Donald Trump’s endorsement throughout his campaign. Trump publicly declared his "complete and total endorsement" of Fuller via a post on his Truth Social platform and reiterated his support during a rally held in Rome, Georgia, last month. This alignment with Trump has clearly resonated with a significant portion of the Republican base.

Speaking on Tuesday night following the projection of his advance to the runoff, Fuller emphasized the importance of Trump’s backing and his connection to the "MAGA movement." He stated, "For those of you who questioned how important Donald J Trump is to this country, to Georgia 14, and the state of Georgia, you see what this man means to this community, what he means to the people in this country, and what he means to the MAGA movement." Fuller’s remarks highlight the deep loyalty Trump commands within the district and his strategic role in Fuller’s candidacy.

The runoff election is slated to take place on April 7th. The winner of this runoff will serve out the remainder of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s current term, which concludes in January. However, the victory will be short-lived in terms of immediate electoral respite, as the successful candidate will need to immediately pivot to campaigning for their own full term in Congress during the upcoming midterm elections.

Shawn Harris, the Democratic candidate, secured the highest number of votes in the initial election. This outcome is largely attributed to the fragmentation of the Republican vote among numerous candidates, which allowed Harris to gain a plurality. In the upcoming runoff, Harris will face a single opponent in Clay Fuller. It is anticipated that the Republican base, which was divided in the first round, may now coalesce behind Fuller, presenting a formidable challenge for the Democratic contender.

Demonstrating the swift mobilization of political forces, former President Trump was quick to leverage his platform on Truth Social to rally support for Fuller. He posted, "Clay Fuller is going to be a fantastic Congressman in representing the Great State of Georgia. Now we have to be careful and finish it off. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!" This message underscores Trump’s commitment to ensuring Fuller’s victory and his continued involvement in the race.

On the Democratic side, the campaign is also gearing up for the runoff, with prominent figures offering their support. Former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg publicly congratulated Harris on the social media platform X, stating, "Proud to be in your corner – and looking forward to campaigning with you on Saturday." This indicates a concerted effort by national Democrats to support Harris and potentially flip the seat.

Harris, in an interview with the BBC, articulated his campaign’s strategy moving forward. He expressed his intention to "stay true to what we’ve been doing" and conveyed a message of inclusivity to all voters. "Everybody who voted for any other candidate […] I want to talk to every last one of them, and say: ‘Give me a chance’," Harris stated, signaling his desire to bridge divides and appeal to a broader electorate beyond the Democratic base.

The larger-than-life political persona of Marjorie Taylor Greene undoubtedly cast a significant shadow over the election as voters sought her successor. During her nearly six years in Congress, Greene cultivated a reputation for her often bombastic style in committee hearings, her embrace of conspiracy theories, and her advocacy for hardline immigration policies. Her tenure was marked by a distinctive and often controversial approach to politics, making her a polarizing figure.

A notable development that impacted her political standing was a public falling out with former President Trump. This rift reportedly occurred over the Epstein files. Greene had actively pushed for legislation that would compel the government to release its extensive documentation related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, a stance that met with Trump’s opposition. Despite Trump’s initial resistance, Congress eventually passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Trump subsequently signed into law, following sustained political pressure. However, this legislative victory did not mend the fractured relationship between Greene and Trump. More recently, since departing from Congress in January, Greene has used her X account to voice criticism of Trump, particularly concerning military operations conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Voters heading to the polls on Tuesday were acutely aware of the dynamics surrounding Greene’s departure and her relationship with Trump. They were faced with the complex task of choosing from a substantial field of seventeen candidates, representing both the Democratic and Republican parties.

For some Republican voters, Trump’s endorsement served as a crucial guide in their decision-making process, reflecting a desire for a representative who would be a steadfast advocate for the former president. Marsha Miles, a voter interviewed outside a polling place in Rome, stated that she would have voted for Fuller regardless, but Trump’s endorsement confirmed her belief that he was the correct choice. Beyond the presidential endorsement, Miles also cited Fuller’s "morals, what he stands for, and his military service" as key factors in her decision.

Fuller’s campaign platform closely mirrored Trump’s policy priorities, including a focus on mass deportations, an increase in domestic manufacturing, and a stringent "tough-on-crime" stance. These policy positions appear to have resonated strongly with a segment of the electorate seeking a return to what they perceive as core American values and robust law enforcement. Teresa Lumsden, who attended Fuller’s election night party, expressed her satisfaction with his candidacy, remarking, "He’s the perfect choice for representation in this area."

Concurrently, Democrats in the district harbored hopes of reclaiming the seat after six years of Greene’s representation. Their chosen candidate, Shawn Harris, a retired brigadier general and local farmer, presented himself as a compelling alternative. Sheila Hutchings, a Democratic voter, explained her support for Harris by expressing a desire for "a more positive" personality in Congress, someone who would "speak kindly" to all constituents, irrespective of their political affiliation. This sentiment suggests a yearning for a less confrontational and more unifying approach to governance.
