Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has pledged to enact more stringent gun control measures in the wake of a horrific shooting carried out by a teenager on the outskirts of Bangkok, an act that claimed the lives of eight individuals and left 22 others injured. The tragic incident unfolded when the 14-year-old assailant first murdered his grandparents at their shared residence before proceeding to Debsirin School in Nonthaburi, where he was a student. At the school, the perpetrator fatally shot five teachers before taking his own life. Subsequent reports from Thai media indicated that an additional student succumbed to their injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Prime Minister Charnvirakul declared his intention to introduce legislation that would severely restrict the public carrying of firearms, with the proposed new laws intended to permit only on-duty government officials to possess and carry guns. Police Colonel Thadsakorn Konthong confirmed that the firearm and ammunition used in the massacre belonged to the teen’s grandfather. An initial examination of the scene revealed that the grandfather’s bedroom had been searched, suggesting the teenager had accessed the weapon from there. International and local news outlets have since reported that the gun in question was legally registered and possessed a valid permit, highlighting a potential loophole or failure in the existing regulatory framework.
Thailand is known to have one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 10.3 million firearms in civilian possession. Alarmingly, approximately four million of these are believed to be held illegally. While the country’s existing gun laws are considered strict, carrying penalties of up to 10 years in jail for illegal arms possession, the consistent and effective enforcement of these regulations has been a persistent challenge. Notably, during his tenure as interior minister, Prime Minister Charnvirakul had previously championed and introduced several gun control initiatives, including a temporary moratorium on new gun licenses and restrictions on firearm imports.
Speaking on Friday, the Prime Minister expressed profound sorrow and disbelief, stating, "This tragedy shouldn’t have happened." He elaborated on his anguish, saying, "I don’t just feel sorry for the victims but I feel sorry that this happened. How can this happen in our country?" His strong reaction underscores the deep impact of this event on the nation’s psyche and its leadership.
The teenage perpetrator is believed to have committed the initial murders of his 73-year-old grandfather and 74-year-old grandmother at their two-storey apartment around 05:00 local time on Friday (22:00 GMT on Thursday). Both victims were reportedly killed by a single gunshot wound to the head, according to a Thai police official. Following these devastating acts, the teenager boarded a school bus, reportedly carrying the firearm and a significant quantity of ammunition. He then attended his first class at the school, which commenced at 08:30, followed by his second class at 09:20.
Approximately half an hour into his second class, the assailant drew his weapon and began firing. Police reports indicate that the teenager initially targeted teachers on the school’s sixth floor, killing three of them. "He then walked down the stairs and encountered the school’s deputy director and the director’s secretary, who were going up the stairs to check on the situation," Police Major General Dejrapee Kongdee informed Reuters. "The attacker shot and killed both of them on the staircase."
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene while the shooting was still in progress. They discovered the attacker, who by that time had taken his own life, at approximately 10:40. At the time of the initial police intervention, five people had been killed and at least 23 were injured. Tragically, later reports from Thailand’s public broadcaster and the Bangkok Post confirmed that an eighth victim had died from their injuries, compounding the national grief.
National police chief Gen Kittiratt Phanphet revealed to reporters that forensic investigators had determined the attacker’s shots were remarkably accurate, with many hitting vital areas of the body. The Prime Minister characterized the attack as "well prepared" with "clear steps and clear goals," suggesting a premeditated and organized act rather than an impulsive outburst.
According to local media investigations, police have examined electronic devices belonging to the teenager and discovered several videos pertaining to school shootings in the United States, raising concerns about potential external influences or inspiration. Family members, speaking to Thai media, have described the teenager as generally quiet and well-behaved. His uncle, in particular, stated that the teen spent a significant amount of time indoors playing violent video games and rarely ventured outside. He also indicated that there had been no prior warning signs or indications that the teenager was planning such a horrific attack. The attacker had been living with his grandparents following his parents’ divorce.
The Debsirin School, an institution with a long and distinguished history dating back to its founding in Bangkok in 1885, is recognized as one of Thailand’s premier secondary schools, with multiple branches across the country. It boasts a notable alumni list that includes many prominent Thai figures, encompassing diplomats, athletes, and several former prime ministers, making the targeting of such an esteemed educational establishment all the more shocking and poignant. The school’s location in Nonthaburi, a province west of Bangkok, places it within the greater Bangkok metropolitan area, a bustling and densely populated region where such violence can have a profound and widespread impact.
