Londoners can now hail the UK’s first robotaxis, as Uber has become the first company to launch a self-driving minicab service in the capital. Initially, the fleet comprises just 15 autonomous vehicles licensed to operate within the city, each equipped with a human safety driver ready to intervene if necessary. This significant rollout follows a survey by Uber that revealed over 100,000 London-based customers would opt for a self-driving taxi, despite past malfunctions of driverless rides in US cities where the technology is already operational. As I discovered when I became the first UK journalist to experience this new service, the ride was largely smooth, though the safety driver did need to take control on one occasion.
Currently, fares for these robotaxi rides mirror those of standard UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort journeys, with upfront pricing clearly displayed in the app. A self-driving ride option will only appear in the app after a journey has been booked and if an autonomous vehicle is available nearby. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, outlined a phased introduction over several years, emphasizing that consumers will always have the choice between a human-driven or autonomous vehicle. He anticipates that human drivers will remain a significant part of Uber London’s operations for the foreseeable future, given the market’s growth.
The current fleet consists of Ford Mustang electric vehicles, powered by the UK tech firm Wayve’s driverless car technology. This advanced AI system continuously analyzes real-time data gathered by sensors mounted on the vehicle’s roof and other locations, allowing the cars to make on-the-spot decisions rather than relying on pre-programmed routes. This approach positions Uber and Wayve in a competitive landscape, with rivals like Google’s autonomous car company Waymo and Chinese tech giant Baidu also vying for a presence in the UK market. Wayve CEO Alex Kendall described the development of this technology as "the space race for our generation," acknowledging the substantial challenges involved but highlighting their pioneering approach that enables scaling in complex urban environments like London and globally.
My personal experience as one of the first public passengers was illuminating. After a brief 30-second safety briefing from the human driver, we set off into the bustling heart of central London. For several minutes, the autonomous system navigated the dense traffic adeptly, passing a political demonstration outside Parliament and successfully negotiating traffic lights and roadworks. A particularly noteworthy moment involved a cyclist at a mini-roundabout who waved us forward; the car recognized the gesture and proceeded accordingly.
However, the demonstration of the safety driver’s crucial role came when we were pulling away from a parked van on a narrow side road. The rear doors of the van unexpectedly swung open, prompting the autonomous vehicle to brake sharply. An internal alarm sounded, and the safety driver immediately took control of the steering wheel. Wayve later clarified that the intervention was the driver’s decision, and they remained confident their AI would have managed the situation. This brief, dramatic interruption, lasting only a couple of seconds, underscored the current reality: while the industry is eager to advance, regulators are proceeding with a more cautious, safety-first approach.
The timeline for fully driverless cars on London’s roads has become a subject of increasing scrutiny. While initial suggestions from the government and industry pointed towards a 2026 launch, this now appears unlikely. The Department for Transport (DfT) and Transport for London (TfL) are responsible for overseeing the regulatory framework and have faced criticism for their deliberate pace. A DfT spokesperson stated that the department is working towards a framework for self-driving cars to be on the roads by 2027, though a specific date remains unconfirmed. The statement emphasized that these services will be introduced cautiously, subject to rigorous safety testing, regulatory approval, and local consent, taking into account potential impacts on roads, jobs, and communities. Christina Calderator, TfL’s director of transport strategy and policy, assured that decisions are not being delayed but rather that the authorities are "taking time to get it right" to ensure the safety of this novel technology in London.
The trade union GMB has voiced concerns about the potential social and economic disruption caused by the widespread adoption of driverless vehicles. David McMullen, a senior organizer for the GMB, urged TfL and the government to develop a comprehensive plan to protect drivers before moving forward with autonomous services, deeming the current push premature without such safeguards.
Meanwhile, Waymo, Google’s autonomous vehicle company, has been actively mapping London’s streets for several months with vehicles that, while containing safety drivers and staff, are not yet available to the public. Waymo has indicated no intention to introduce a public service that includes a human driver. Experts continue to highlight the numerous safety challenges that regulators must address. Professor Siddartha Khastgir, head of safe autonomy at the University of Warwick’s Warwick Manufacturing Group, points to the nuanced decision-making of human drivers, such as yielding to emergency services by mounting a kerb, and questions how self-driving vehicles would replicate such actions in complex environments like London. The industry’s rapid advancement is undeniable, but the path to widespread public adoption of fully autonomous taxis in the UK is paved with careful consideration and rigorous regulatory oversight.
