Israeli strikes kill 20 in Gaza, hospitals say, after soldier wounded by gunfire

At least 20 Palestinians, including several children and a paramedic, have been killed in a series of Israeli strikes that targeted the northern and southern areas of the Gaza Strip, according to reports from local hospitals. The Israeli military stated that its tanks and aircraft conducted precise strikes against what it termed "terrorists" who had opened fire on its troops in the northern part of the strip, an incident that resulted in the serious wounding of an Israeli officer. Hospitals in Gaza reported receiving a significant number of casualties. Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City confirmed it had received the bodies of 13 individuals, five of whom were identified as children. These casualties were attributed to strikes that hit tents housing displaced families and residential homes in the eastern Zeitoun and Tuffah neighborhoods. Among those gathered at the hospital’s courtyard for funeral prayers was Abu Mohammed Haboush, who recounted the devastating moment his family was asleep in their home when it was shelled. He tearfully told the Reuters news agency, "Our children were martyred – my son was martyred, my brother’s son and daughter were martyred. We have nothing to do with anything, we are peaceful people."

Further south, Nasser hospital in the city of Khan Younis reported that four deceased individuals, including one child, were brought to their facility following strikes on tents located in the southern Qizan Rashwan area. The grim toll continued to rise as another two children and a paramedic were later reported killed in the coastal al-Mawasi area, situated southwest of Khan Younis, according to medical sources. Jihad al-Hinnawi, a first responder from the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency, recounted to Reuters how the paramedic had initially rushed to the aid of victims from a strike on a tent in the al-Mawasi area, only to be killed by a subsequent strike on the same location. The Palestinian Red Crescent also issued a separate statement confirming the death of one of its paramedics, Hussein al-Semieri, who was reportedly killed while on duty in the Khan Younis area. The humanitarian organization vehemently condemned the actions of the Israeli military, labeling it a "glaring violation" of international humanitarian law, which specifically mandates the protection of medical personnel.

Both Israel and Hamas have been engaged in a cycle of mutual accusations, citing nearly daily violations of the ceasefire that officially took effect on October 10th. This latest escalation follows an incident on Sunday, where Israeli strikes across Gaza resulted in the deaths of over 30 people. The Israeli military asserted that these strikes were a direct response to gunmen emerging from a tunnel in the southern Rafah area, beyond the established Yellow Line. The health ministry in Gaza, which is administered by Hamas, has reported that at least 556 people have lost their lives due to Israeli fire since the ceasefire’s inception. Conversely, the Israeli military has stated that four of its soldiers have been killed in attacks originating from Palestinian territories.
