Roblox defends expanded safety checks but parents are concerned

Parents have voiced their dismay to the BBC, detailing instances where their children have been erroneously identified as adults during the age-verification process. This misclassification, they contend, directly undermines the protective measures designed to safeguard younger users.

A Simpler, Yet Flawed, Approach?

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, explained that the company’s advanced age-estimation system, which incorporates facial analysis, is now actively utilized by over half of its daily user base, translating to tens of millions of individuals worldwide. He stated that for users under 18, the system typically achieves an age estimation with an accuracy of "about 1.4 years, plus or minus." While Roblox has not publicly disclosed comprehensive data on the frequency of children being misclassified as older users, Kaufman firmly asserted that this automated technology offers a more reliable method than simply asking users to self-report their age. "When you ask them that simple question," he elaborated, "users are going to tell you whatever they want to tell you in order to get access." This suggests a belief within Roblox that explicit self-declaration is inherently untrustworthy, necessitating a more sophisticated, albeit imperfect, technological solution.

Age-Rated Accounts: A Layered Defense

Roblox already implements an age-verification mechanism that restricts access to chat features, categorizing users into age bands intended to segment communication between children, teenagers, and adults. The company maintains that this measure is crucial for mitigating the risks of grooming and unsolicited contact on its expansive platform. The recently introduced system further refines this approach by extending it to account types.

Under the new regulations, users who opt out of or fail to complete an age check will face significant restrictions. They will be confined to child-appropriate content and will be completely barred from any form of communication on the platform. This development follows closely on the heels of a widely publicized case where the mother of a 14-year-old girl, who was groomed into sharing explicit images with an 18-year-old man, publicly criticized the platform for its perceived shortcomings in protecting children.

Navigating the Developer Landscape and Parental Concerns

To curate age-appropriate experiences for users under 16, Kaufman revealed that Roblox employs a multifaceted approach. This includes analyzing the longevity of a game on the platform, as well as the historical data and usage patterns of the individuals who create games. Game developers themselves are subject to suitability criteria, and those featuring social or free-form interaction elements will not be readily available on the "Kids" and "Select" accounts by default. Roblox currently boasts a thriving community of over two million such content creators, referred to as "developers."

However, Kaufman stressed the importance of not allowing the opinions of a single developer to dictate the platform’s overall safety strategy: "it was, ‘irresponsible to choose one of those two million and have their opinion dictate how everybody feels about the platform.’" Despite these assurances, some parents report that rectifying errors in age checks can be a protracted and emotionally taxing ordeal. Kaufman acknowledged that mistakes can occur, but suggested that many parental complaints stem from parents completing age checks on behalf of their children or from a general misunderstanding of the process. He reassured that Roblox offers avenues for correction, including the ability for parents to reset age checks, submit appeals, or utilize ID verification to rectify any inaccuracies. Furthermore, users may be prompted for re-verification if their online behavior appears inconsistent with their established age classification. To empower parents further, they will soon have the capability to block specific games and manage direct messages until their child reaches the age of 16.

Expert Analysis and the Broader Regulatory Landscape

Professor Sonia Livingstone, a leading expert in Media and Communications at the London School of Economics, offered a cautiously optimistic perspective on Roblox’s response, describing it as "encouraging." However, she highlighted persistent concerns regarding the presence of adult-oriented content within games and the potential for children to be contacted inappropriately on the platform. Professor Livingstone stated that there is "mounting evidence its platform continues to pose real risks to children’s safety." She further emphasized the need for independent verification for parents, asserting that "Parents deserve independent confirmation that the moderation is sufficient, that help systems are effective, and that age checks aren’t used for commercial profiling."

These evolving safety measures are being implemented against a backdrop of escalating global pressure on technology companies to enhance child protection online. In the United Kingdom, platforms are now subject to new obligations under the Online Safety Act, and numerous countries have introduced or are contemplating restrictions on social media usage for individuals under 16. Kaufman conceded that Roblox’s immense popularity inherently subjects it to intense scrutiny, making it almost inevitable that parents and regulators would demand more stringent protections. "Because we’re the biggest online gaming platform in the world, it makes sense that there’s a lot of attention on us," he remarked, reiterating his belief that the platform is "going above and beyond what any other gaming platform is doing."
