Bovine TB: Gaps in evidence about impact of vaccinating badgers

He further elaborated that any potential cattle-level benefit from badger vaccination is "likely to depend on sustained and sufficiently extensive vaccination coverage alongside effective cattle controls." This implies a multi-faceted approach where badger vaccination complements, rather than replaces, robust cattle testing, movement restrictions, biosecurity measures, and potentially other wildlife interventions. Without this integrated strategy, the impact of badger vaccination alone may be diluted or imperceptible.

Dr. McKeown emphasised that the solution is not simply to increase the volume of vaccinations but to implement vaccination programmes that are "better targeted, measured and evaluated." This calls for a sophisticated, data-driven methodology. He proposed innovative techniques, stating, "By combining non-invasive genetic monitoring with sett surveys, camera traps and movement data, we can estimate local badger numbers, check the proportion of the population reached and identify significant gaps." This advanced monitoring would allow for a more precise understanding of badger population dynamics, vaccination uptake rates, and areas where vaccination efforts might be falling short, enabling more efficient resource allocation and adaptive management strategies.

In response to the ongoing concerns and renewed calls for action, a spokesperson for the Welsh government affirmed their commitment to tackling bTB. "We are renewing our approach to eradicating bovine TB in Wales, focusing on three main elements: cattle, people, and wildlife," the spokesperson stated. This renewed focus signals a comprehensive strategy that recognises the multi-host nature of the disease and the critical human element involved in its management. Adding another layer to the government’s strategic overhaul, August 2024 saw the establishment of a new board by the government, specifically tasked with driving efforts to eliminate the disease.
