Alstom to build new battery-electric train fleet

The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed that these cutting-edge trains are integral to the ambitious Transpennine Route Upgrade’s (TRU) objectives. The TRU is a multi-billion-pound programme designed to modernise and electrify the critical railway corridor between Manchester, Leeds, and York, aiming to significantly boost capacity by 30%. This translates into thousands of additional seats available daily across the Pennines by the early to mid-2030s, addressing a longstanding demand for improved transport links in a region vital to the UK economy. Beyond mere capacity, the upgrade encompasses widespread electrification, digital signalling improvements, and station enhancements, collectively designed to create a more resilient, efficient, and environmentally friendly railway.

The new battery-electric fleet will revolutionise journeys across a vast swathe of northern England, connecting major urban centres and picturesque destinations. Key routes slated to benefit include the vital corridor between Liverpool Lime Street and Scarborough, linking the bustling Merseyside metropolis with the popular Yorkshire coast. Other critical connections will see services running from Manchester Airport to Saltburn, providing a seamless link for international travellers and residents alike, and between Manchester Piccadilly and Hull, fostering greater economic and social ties between the North West and Humber regions. These routes represent significant arteries for both commuter and leisure travel, and the introduction of advanced rolling stock is expected to stimulate regional growth and enhance quality of life.

The DfT anticipates that travel between Manchester and Leeds, two of the North’s most significant economic hubs, will be cut by up to 10 minutes. Furthermore, the journey between Manchester and York, a historic and economically vibrant city, will see reductions of up to 14 minutes. Dating back to 1876, the Derby facility boasts an unparalleled legacy in British railway manufacturing, having produced generations of iconic trains. It remains the largest rolling stock train manufacturing site outside of China, a testament to the UK’s engineering prowess. The factory’s future had been a subject of intense scrutiny and concern, particularly following a redundancy consultation less than three months prior to this announcement, which put approximately 1,300 jobs at risk. The securing of this new contract, alongside a separate £370 million contract in 2024 to produce 10 new London Elizabeth line trains, provides a vital lifeline, helping to secure skilled jobs and maintain critical manufacturing capabilities in the UK.
