One of her most celebrated discoveries occurred in Cyprus, where she unearthed a previously unknown species of dwarf elephant, Palaeoloxodon cypriotes, alongside dwarf hippos. This discovery was pivotal in understanding the phenomenon of island dwarfism – where large mainland animals evolve into smaller forms when isolated on islands due to limited resources and an absence of predators. Her work provided crucial insights into ancient island ecosystems and the evolutionary pressures that shape species over millennia. Her subsequent findings in the Balearic Islands in 1909 were equally significant, leading to the identification of Myotragus balearicus, an extinct goat-like antelope with unique rodent-like incisors, further expanding the understanding of specialized island fauna. These discoveries were not just novelties; they significantly advanced the field of palaeontology, challenging existing theories and opening new avenues of research into biogeography and evolution.

Despite her groundbreaking work and prolific output – she authored more than 80 published scientific papers – Dorothea Bate faced continuous systemic challenges inherent to her time. For much of her career, she toiled without a permanent paid position, often relying on grants from organizations like the Royal Society and the British Association for the Advancement of Science. This lack of institutional stability and financial security underscores her profound dedication to science. This is complemented by an earlier blue plaque dedicated to Bate in 2017 at Napier House in Carmarthen, her birthplace. In a joint statement, co-CEOs of Historic England, Claudia Kenyatta and Emma Squire, eloquently captured the essence of Bate’s character and impact. They added, "She used this drive to make sense of ancient life through fragments of bone, bringing it to life once again. Her research transformed our understanding of prehistoric animals and ancient environments." Crucially, they emphasized her role as a trailblazer: "Not only does her work continue to be invaluable in the field that she helped to establish, but as one of the first women to be employed by the Natural History Museum she was instrumental in paving the way for future women in science. This plaque ensures that her pioneering contributions to science receives the wider recognition it deserves."

Heritage minister Baroness Twycross further underscored Bate’s societal impact, stating that her achievements "helped break through the glass ceiling and paved the way for women in palaeontology." This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Sandra Knapp, director of research at the Natural History Museum, who acknowledged the often-hidden contributions of women in science. Dr. Knapp noted, "The role of women scientists in natural history is often hidden – but Dorothea Bate’s work with fossil mammals was both innovative and set a path for others, despite obstacles." She concluded, "The installation of this plaque not only honours her but also serves as a reminder that women have been, and continue to be, key contributors to our understanding of the natural world."
