Some of Wales’ most endangered species are "at risk of vanishing" from a critical area within the country’s largest national park, experts have warned, highlighting a stark "nature emergency" unfolding in one of the nation’s most cherished landscapes. The National Trust has issued a grave warning that Nant Ffrancon, a breathtaking valley nestled within Eryri National Park (formerly known as Snowdonia), is experiencing "serious ecological decline." This deterioration threatens the very existence of several iconic species, including the elusive mountain blackbird (ring ouzel) and the delicate mountain finch, which are teetering on the brink of local extinction.
In response to this urgent crisis, a substantial new initiative, backed by nearly £1 million in funding, has been launched. This ambitious scheme aims to restore and conserve over 4,000 acres of vital habitats across Eryri, setting a precedent for future conservation efforts in Wales. Simon Rogers, representing the National Trust, articulated the gravity of the situation, stating, "We’re in a very serious situation – we’re in a nature emergency. There are so many species in this valley which are on the brink of extinction." His words underscore the profound loss that could occur if immediate and decisive action is not taken.
Nant Ffrancon, stretching from the dramatic, glaciated peaks of Cwm Idwal down to the verdant depths of Dyffryn Ogwen, represents a landscape of unparalleled beauty and ecological significance in Wales. Its rugged terrain, carved by ancient ice, supports a unique mosaic of habitats, from high-altitude heath and acid grassland to ancient woodlands and pristine river systems. This rich tapestry of environments historically supported a diverse array of flora and fauna, many of which are specially adapted to the harsh upland conditions. However, decades of environmental pressures, including changes in land management practices, air pollution, and the undeniable impacts of climate change, have led to a significant deterioration of these habitats. Experts lament that this degradation has pushed some of Wales’ most threatened species, such as the distinctive ring ouzel bird, which is a key indicator of upland ecosystem health, to the precipice of disappearance from this area altogether.
The new project, spearheaded by the National Trust, is designed as a collaborative effort. It seeks to weave together the expertise of conservationists with the invaluable local knowledge of tenant farmers, the dedication of volunteers, and the deep-rooted understanding of local communities. Together, they will embark on a comprehensive mission to restore and protect 4,040 acres of diverse habitats. Rogers emphasized the "unique variety of habitats" present in the area, from rare montane communities to vital peatlands and riverine ecosystems, reiterating his stark warning that many species within these habitats "really are on the brink."
Central to the project’s strategy is a multi-faceted approach to ecological restoration. This includes targeted interventions to improve the health of upland bogs, which are critical carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots. Efforts will also focus on enhancing native woodlands, fostering their regeneration and increasing their resilience against disease and climate impacts. The restoration work will also tackle invasive species, which outcompete native flora and disrupt delicate ecosystems. A significant component of the plan involves promoting the recovery of degraded grasslands and heathlands, crucial foraging and breeding grounds for many threatened bird species.
Beyond direct habitat interventions, the project will also provide crucial support to other existing conservation initiatives. One such beneficiary is Tlysau Mynydd Eryri (Mountain Jewels of Eryri), a vital conservation partnership led by Plantlife Cymru. This particular programme is dedicated to safeguarding the future of some of Wales’ rarest alpine plants, tiny botanical treasures that cling to life in the most exposed and challenging mountain environments. These plants, often overlooked, are incredibly sensitive to environmental changes and are emblematic of the unique biodiversity found in Eryri’s high peaks.
To accurately gauge the effectiveness of the restoration work and ensure adaptive management, rigorous ecological surveys and regular monitoring will be integral. The health of the valley will be assessed using a carefully selected suite of indicator species. For instance, the presence and breeding success of the woodcock, a shy woodland bird, can provide insights into woodland health and soil quality. Similarly, the otter, a top predator, indicates the overall health of river systems and water quality. Plant species like aspen, with its shimmering leaves and role in diverse woodland ecosystems, and juniper, a resilient conifer crucial for upland bird habitats, will also serve as vital barometers of environmental recovery. This scientific approach ensures that interventions are data-driven and responsive to the actual ecological changes occurring on the ground.
An innovative aspect of the project involves the pioneering use of GPS livestock collars to manage grazing practices with unprecedented precision. Rhys Wheldon-Roberts, the Cwm Idwal Partnership Officer, explained the profound importance of this monitoring technology. "Monitoring is really important because it allows us to graze in the right areas at the right densities and at the right time," he stated. He further elaborated on the practical application: "The collars on the cattle allow us to move the cattle around the landscape and you can monitor it as you go, and the farmers can see that data live on their apps." This real-time data allows farmers to adapt grazing patterns to specific ecological needs, preventing overgrazing in sensitive areas while encouraging it in others to promote biodiversity, for example, by creating varied sward heights that benefit different invertebrates and birds. "It can make grazing something much more effective for the cattle and for nature," Wheldon-Roberts concluded, highlighting the dual benefits for both agricultural sustainability and ecological health. This modern approach represents a significant evolution from traditional grazing methods, offering a powerful tool for land managers.
Crucially, the success of this ambitious undertaking hinges not only on scientific and technological innovation but also on the active involvement of people. As well as working closely with local farmers, there will be a strong emphasis on community involvement and volunteering. This includes opportunities for local residents and visitors to participate directly in monitoring efforts, habitat restoration tasks, and educational programmes designed to deepen their understanding of the landscape. Wheldon-Roberts enthusiastically outlined these opportunities: "There are opportunities for people to get involved in monitoring, in volunteering, just learning about the landscape in general."
Educational outreach forms a cornerstone of the community engagement strategy. "Here in Cwm Idwal we have lots of school visits every year and they’ll be able to see the effects of the project and the effect that the cattle are having in that conservation grazing way, so it’s really exciting in that regard as well," Wheldon-Roberts explained. These visits will provide invaluable hands-on learning experiences for young people, fostering a connection to nature and an appreciation for conservation from an early age. By witnessing the positive impacts of the project firsthand, students can become future stewards of the environment. "By bringing people along with us they get a chance to learn and hopefully appreciate, and ultimately try to protect this special landscape that we’ve got around us," he added, underscoring the long-term vision of cultivating a community deeply invested in the health of Eryri.
The project is being funded by nearly £1 million from the Nature Networks Fund, a critical initiative delivered by the Heritage Fund on behalf of the Welsh government and in partnership with Natural Resources Wales.
