Vikram-1: India’s first private space rocket by Skyroot to carry diamond flower

The vision of making satellite launches as effortless and accessible as booking a taxi is on the cusp of becoming a reality, spearheaded by an ambitious Indian private rocket company poised for its inaugural orbital launch. Skyroot Aerospace, a trailblazing entity that recently achieved unicorn status with a valuation of $1.1 billion, is set to make history with its Vikram-1 rocket. This monumental launch will originate from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) revered launch facility in Sriharikota, a crucial spaceport located in southern India.

Scheduled for lift-off at 11:30 India time (06:00 GMT), the seven-storey Vikram-1 rocket is targeting the Low Earth Orbit, approximately 280 miles (450km) away. This 16-minute flight, if successful, will not only mark Skyroot as the first Indian private company to achieve an orbital launch but also position India as only the third nation globally – following the United States and China – to boast a private entity capable of such advanced space operations. This achievement underscores a pivotal shift in India’s space narrative, moving beyond government-led missions to embrace the dynamic potential of private enterprise.

A successful mission for Vikram-1 is critical for Skyroot’s overarching goal: to establish what its co-founder and CEO, Pawan Kumar Chandana, eloquently terms a "cab service to space." This innovative model aims to allow companies to effortlessly "hire a rocket to ride to a unique location in the orbit to place a satellite or visit a space station." The concept directly addresses a significant bottleneck in the global space industry, where satellite operators frequently endure frustrating waits, sometimes extending for months or even years, for a suitable launch opportunity.

Named in homage to Vikram Sarabhai, universally recognized as the father of India’s space programme, the Vikram-1 is a compact yet potent launch vehicle. Chandana revealed to the BBC that the rocket is designed to carry payloads of up to 350kg, catering specifically to the burgeoning small satellite market. This niche, Skyroot believes, holds the key to revolutionizing access to space. Instead of being constrained by the fixed schedules and shared capacity of larger, government-operated rockets, Skyroot’s customers will be able to book dedicated missions tailored precisely to their satellite’s requirements and desired orbital trajectory. This paradigm shift is akin to choosing a private taxi for a specific destination rather than waiting for a train with multiple stops and a rigid timetable. Chandana further elaborated on this analogy, stating, "If you want to just go to a friend’s house, you don’t need a train, you book a cab, an Uber. What we are offering is a cab service to space, which can be used to ride to a unique location in the orbit to place a satellite or visit a station." This customer-centric approach promises unparalleled flexibility and efficiency for small payload operators.

The operational model proposed by Skyroot bears a striking resemblance to that of Rocket Lab in the United States, a highly successful company that has carved out a significant market share by providing small-lift launch vehicles. Should Skyroot replicate this success, it would firmly establish India’s credentials in the competitive global commercial space market.

The maiden test launch mission, aptly named "Aagman" – a Sanskrit word meaning "arrival" – is slated to deploy a diverse array of six payloads into orbit. These include vital scientific instruments such as a robotic arm designed for removing space debris, an advanced Earth observation camera, and several satellites, including one from a German company. Each of these scientific and commercial payloads represents a step forward in various fields, from environmental monitoring to space sustainability.

Beyond the purely utilitarian, two symbolic payloads have captured the imagination of many in India, generating considerable public buzz. One is an exquisitely crafted lotus flower made of lab-grown diamonds, while the other is a minuscule gold rocket containing micro-sculptures of three of India’s most celebrated scientists. These intricate sculptures, each smaller than a grain of rice, pay profound tribute to the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Sir C.V. Raman, the visionary aerospace engineer and former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and of course, Vikram Sarabhai himself.

Chandana articulated the deep reverence behind these tributes: "We exist because of the Indian space programme; we stand on the shoulders of our early visionaries, and this is our way of paying tribute to three great scientists who shaped India’s space programme." Sir C.V. Raman’s groundbreaking work in light scattering, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930, laid fundamental scientific principles. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, often hailed as the "Missile Man of India," was instrumental in the development of India’s ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs, and later, as president, inspired millions with his vision for a developed India. Vikram Sarabhai’s pioneering efforts established ISRO and laid the foundation for India’s independent space journey. By honoring these titans, Skyroot acknowledges its heritage and the intellectual legacy upon which its innovations are built.

The diamond lotus, christened "Cosmic Bloom" and developed by Cosmos Diamonds, is more than just a decorative item. It is an artist’s profound tribute to the boundless expanse of space and a celebration of India’s vibrant creativity. Chandana suggested that its ethereal beauty is expected to evoke the memorable line "like a diamond in the sky" from the beloved nursery rhyme "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," connecting the wonder of space with a sense of childhood magic and universal appeal.

Saturday’s launch is the first of two planned test flights for Skyroot this year, paving the way for the commencement of commercial operations next year. The company boasts a robust manufacturing capability, with the capacity to construct one rocket every month at its state-of-the-art factory in the southern city of Hyderabad. This production rate is crucial for meeting the anticipated demand for its "cab service" model.

Chandana underscored the historical significance of the upcoming flight, stating, "This will be a historic flight for the private space sector in India. It’ll be a major milestone." However, he also acknowledged the inherent challenges and uncertainties of space launches, admitting, "It’s fingers crossed for him at the moment though – SpaceX succeeded in its fourth attempt, he says." This candid remark highlights the immense technical complexities involved and the perseverance required to achieve success in the space industry.

Skyroot Aerospace itself was founded in 2018 by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, both former colleagues at ISRO. Their decision to leave their government positions and embark on the entrepreneurial path to build rocket components for satellites was a bold move, fueled by a shared vision for a privatized Indian space sector. Their foresight proved prescient. In 2020, the Indian government enacted a landmark policy, opening up the space sector to private firms. This liberalization allowed private entities to develop rockets and satellites and utilize ISRO’s advanced launch facilities, with the strategic aim of significantly increasing India’s share in the global space business market from its then 2% to a more ambitious 10% by 2030.

Since this policy shift, the Indian government reports that over 400 space startups have emerged across the country. Among these, Skyroot has distinguished itself as the most successful, becoming the sole unicorn in the burgeoning sector. The company first garnered widespread attention in November 2022 when it successfully launched India’s first privately developed suborbital rocket, a crucial precursor to its current orbital ambitions.

All eyes are now firmly fixed on Saturday’s launch, which unfolds at a time when India’s national space programme, under ISRO, has been globally recognized for its remarkable achievements. In recent years, ISRO has executed historic missions to the Moon (Chandrayaan program), Mars (Mangalyaan), and the Sun (Aditya-L1), showcasing India’s prowess in deep space exploration. Looking ahead, India has set ambitious goals, including sending astronauts into space with the Gaganyaan mission next year, dispatching an orbiter to Venus by 2028, and establishing its own space station by 2035.

While Skyroot’s "cab service" could certainly cater to some of ISRO’s auxiliary space programme needs, Chandana emphasized that the company’s primary focus is the global market. "70-80% of our market would be the global economy," he stated. The economic opportunity is indeed immense, with small satellites playing an increasingly critical role in supporting myriad services that millions worldwide rely upon daily. These applications span across vital sectors such as agriculture and fisheries, disaster management, communications, global connectivity, advanced navigation systems, and national security. Skyroot’s entry into the orbital launch market is poised not only to catalyze India’s private space sector but also to significantly contribute to the global space economy, offering a flexible and cost-effective solution for deploying essential satellite infrastructure.
