Russia launches major ballistic-missile attack on Ukrainian cities

Russia unleashed a devastating barrage of ballistic missiles and drones across Ukraine, resulting in at least eight confirmed fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to official reports. The city of Kharkiv bore the brunt of the assault, with four individuals losing their lives. The capital, Kyiv, also suffered a tragic loss, with an elderly woman among the dead. Further casualties were reported in Zaporizhzhia in the south, where two people perished, and in Sumy in the north-east, which recorded one fatality. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack on Kyiv as "one of the most massive ballistic attacks" since the commencement of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Adding to the grim tally, Ukraine’s navy announced late Sunday that five people were killed when a Turkish-owned civilian cargo ship carrying grain was struck by Russian missiles in the Black Sea. Russia has yet to issue a comment regarding this incident. In a retaliatory move, Ukraine claimed to have successfully struck three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea, alongside three oil depots in the southern Stavropol region. President Zelensky emphasized that these targets were instrumental in "financing Russian aggression."

The Ukrainian military reported that a significant number of areas within the Kyiv region were hit during the overnight onslaught. Air defense systems in the capital managed to intercept 18 out of 41 incoming missiles, along with 108 drones. In Kharkiv, regional head Oleh Syniehubov confirmed that a postal terminal in the city’s suburbs was targeted, resulting in the deaths of four men aged between 24 and 62. Several of those injured were reported to be in critical condition.

President Zelensky, in a Telegram message, provided a stark overview of Russia’s recent aerial campaign, stating that in the past week alone, Ukraine had faced approximately 1,450 strike drones, over 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles of various types. He also detailed Ukrainian strikes, asserting that units of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) had simultaneously hit three oil depots in the Stavropol region, while Armed Forces units targeted another fuel-sector facility in the same area. Furthermore, Zelensky reported "precise hits on three Russian ‘shadow fleet’ tankers in the Black Sea," expressing gratitude to the units involved in efforts to "spread the realization within Russia that this war must be brought to an end."

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium, responsible for transporting Kazakhstan’s Caspian oil to Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, confirmed that its terminal had been struck. The consortium reported that two tankers sustained damage, leading to the suspension of oil loading operations. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or oil spills. The governor of Stavropol indicated that a drone attack had ignited a fire in an industrial park.

The latest wave of attacks on Kyiv involved a sophisticated array of Russian weapon systems, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, in addition to 125 drones, according to the Ukrainian air force. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that both residential and non-residential buildings had been damaged, including a supermarket and a dormitory. Firefighters were actively engaged in combating blazes at two warehouses. Ukraine’s emergencies ministry stated that a logistics hub in the Bucha district, near Kyiv, was hit, injuring two individuals.

These overnight strikes followed a series of Ukrainian drone attacks that targeted two warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. These operations, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in eight fatalities and significant fires. Seven deaths and 25 injuries were reported at a facility in Tambov, approximately 475 kilometers south-east of Moscow, while one death and 37 injuries occurred at another Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal, near the Russian capital. President Zelensky had previously stated that Ukraine’s operations were a direct response to "Russian strikes on our civilian infrastructure and on our cities and communities."

Wildberries is widely recognized as the Russian equivalent of Amazon. The RWB group, which encompasses Wildberries and the advertising company Russ, was valued at approximately $12.6 billion by Forbes Russia in 2026. Ukraine has recently escalated its long-range drone attacks on Russia’s critical energy infrastructure, leading to widespread fuel shortages. Earlier in March, Kyiv claimed that nearly 43% of Russia’s oil refining capacity had been "disabled" as a result of these strikes, a figure that the BBC has not independently verified.

Ukraine maintains that Russian oil and gas facilities are legitimate targets, as Moscow heavily relies on fossil fuel exports to finance its ongoing full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022. Concurrently, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian cities, prompting Kyiv to intensify its appeals to European allies for increased supplies of ballistic missile interceptors. "Protection against ballistic missiles is our constant and top priority right now," President Zelensky stated on Sunday. "Interceptors are needed every day." The escalating conflict highlights the critical need for advanced air defense systems for Ukraine to mitigate the persistent threat of Russian aerial assaults.
