This cascade of failures led to the draining of Ufford Hole, a significant water-filled crater, onto surrounding land, including a side channel that threatened the nearby East Suffolk railway line. The Essex & Suffolk Rivers Trust later confirmed that the incident inflicted "significant damage to habitats along a large stretch of the river," painting a grim picture for the future of the waterway.

The once-bustling stretch of river, cherished by local residents for fishing and swimming, became a desolate sight. Furthermore, a wooden walkway adjacent to the damaged bridge, an integral part of a popular riverside footpath, had to be immediately closed off for public safety, severing a beloved recreational link and impacting local businesses reliant on foot traffic.

Councillor Findley underscored the urgency of addressing the weir, emphasising the need to secure it before the "winter flood." Without a properly functioning weir, there is a significant risk that the water flow could "accelerate the channel and create real problems further down the river," potentially undoing the hard-won progress and causing new environmental damage.
